Often, consultants are focused on their own needs, and they do this by being transactionally focused. Being transactionally focused means that the consultant is concerned about completing the transaction and delivering the service only based on what has been agreed to with the client. It also means that the consultant is focused only on the present rather than balancing it with future opportunities.
There are also situations where a consultant is survival focused. In these situations the consultant is only worried about finding their next job and billing as many hours as possible to take care of their own survival. If you're an independent consultant, there are likely times in your career where you may be in this type of situation.
Concentrate on having the client's interests in mind. In the long run this will give you the highest income and also more referrals and longer contracts. Being client focused definitely develops trust with the client, as they can clearly see that the consultant’s interest is focused on their needs.
